Gregg Levy took a swing last week at dogfighting enthusiast and erstwhile quarterback Michael Vick — and connected. Levy, a partner at D.C.’s Covington & Burling, has been principal outside counsel to the National Football League for more than a decade. He and associate Benjamin Block represent the NFL and the Atlanta Falcons in the effort to recover nearly $20 million in bonus money paid to Vick. On Oct. 9, arbitrator Stephen Burbank, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, sided with the team. The Falcons argued that Vick, who pleaded guilty to federal charges for his role in a long-running dogfighting operation in August, knew he was violating the terms of a $130 million contract at the time he signed it in December 2004. The Covington lawyers said Vick used proceeds from the contract to fund his illegal hobby. The players union, which was represented by Dewey & LeBoeuf New York partner Jeffrey Kessler, says it will appeal to U.S. District Judge David Doty in Minneapolis.
