Last week was a good one for Mayer Brown’s top-ranked appellate practice — both present and future. One of its veteran Supreme Court advocates, Chicago-based Stephen Shapiro, carried the banner — successfully, most agree — for business defendants during oral arguments in Stoneridge Investment Partners v. Scientific-Atlanta and Motorola, billed as the biggest securities case in decades. And the firm announced it had snagged Dan Himmelfarb from the Solicitor General’s Office. The former law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas argued 10 high court cases as an assistant to Solicitor General Paul Clement. “Dan is a superb lawyer, and we’re sad to see him leave,” says Clement. “But we’re glad he will still be in town.” For Mayer Brown, hiring Himmelfarb, 42, as a partner — its first appellate lateral hire in years — represents a generational shift, says firm Vice Chairman Kenneth Geller. “As I and Andy Frey and Steve Shapiro get older, we need to keep the practice going and growing with younger people like Dan,” Geller says. The fact that Himmelfarb picked Mayer Brown instead of other ardent suitors, Geller says, is an “exciting” vote of confidence in the firm’s future.
