Senate confirmation hearings for attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey have yet to be scheduled. Although the White House sent the retired federal judge’s nomination to Congress two weeks ago, a questionnaire mailed to Mukasey by the Senate Judiciary Committee has not yet been returned. Without the document, congressional staffers say, the Senate cannot set dates for the hearings. That means a confirmation by the Oct. 8 recess, as the White House had hoped, appears unlikely. Meanwhile, a newly released financial disclosure form shows Mukasey has earned nearly $2 million since he rejoined the New York firm of Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler a year ago. The federal form, released by the White House, shows $1,993,367 as firm income. If confirmed as attorney general, however, he will see his yearly earnings shrink to $186,600. The federal form also shows he mediated a dispute between Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the estate of late Enron Corp. Chairman Kenneth Lay, and his widow, Linda Lay.
