To the Legal:

On behalf of the 13,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, we salute Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Ralph J. Cappy on his nearly 30 years of dedicated service as a member of the Pennsylvania judiciary and congratulate him on his many accomplishments in light of the announcement of his retirement at the end of this year.

As chief justice, he has overseen the dramatic modernization of our commonwealth’s court system and developed innovative new programs to increase access to justice for all Pennsylvanians. Because of Cappy’s exceptional leadership, the court system is poised for even more enhancements in the years to come.

Cappy has worked tirelessly to address the needs of families, women and minorities in our court system. The Philadelphia Bar Association is proud to continue to work in advancing the goals of the Supreme Court’s pioneering Interbranch Commission for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Fairness. We applaud Cappy for guiding the commission in its efforts to eliminate discrimination in state government and in the legal profession, and to increase public confidence in the fairness of state government at all levels and in all branches.

We salute Cappy for his enduring commitment to the principles of judicial independence and judicial excellence. Likewise, we look forward to working with Justice Ronald D. Castille when he assumes leadership of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and pledge to do our part to help the new chief justice in ensuring access to justice for all citizens of this commonwealth.
