The attorney for Oscar Wyatt launched a passionate defense of the 83-year-old Texas oil man Monday, arguing that the federal government’s prosecution of his client for subverting the United Nations’ Oil-for-Food program in Iraq by paying illegal surcharges to Iraqi officials in order to secure oil contracts was “the United States at its hypocritical worst.”
The Wyatt trial represents the latest prosecution, and the biggest to date, in a series of indictments brought in the Oil-for-Food scandal by Michael Garcia, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
