The Software & Information Industry Association collected its first settlement for $300,000 from its campaign to capture corporate copyright pirates. The Washington-based trade association settled copyright claims against market research company Knowledge Networks Inc. of Menlo Park, Calif. The association said Knowledge Networks’ marketing group did not obtain authorization or licenses to distribute copyrighted articles owned by software association members to other Knowledge Networks employees. “Knowledge Networks is a reputable company that made a very costly mistake,” said the association’s litigation counsel Scott Bain. In a statement issued through the software association, Knowledge Networks expressed regret at the copying and determination take proactive steps to avoid future copyright violations. “Knowledge Networks disseminated copies of relevant newspaper and magazine articles in the good faith belief that it was lawful to do so,” said the company, in a statement. The association offers rewards of $500 to $1 million to tipsters who report corporate infringement. The association said the person who reported Knowledge Networks’ copyright violations to the association will receive $6,000.
