CHICAGO— Cook County State’s Attorney Richard Devine said that he won’t seek re-election to a fourth term, leaving office after 11 years in the position. Devine, 64, will be the longest-serving top attorney for the county since World War II, according to a statement issued by his office on Aug. 10. Cook County, which includes Chicago, is the second-largest U.S. county by population. “This is a job that I love and one that I will miss very much,” Devine said in the release. “But, after three terms, it is time to move on.” Devine earlier this month finally secured pay raises for prosecutors in his office following a very public, months long fight with top county officials to get wages for the lawyers equal to those of the county’s public defenders, who unlike the prosecutors are unionized. In May, Devine’s office won a conviction against Juan Luna, who killed seven people at a suburban restaurant, Brown’s Chicken & Pasta in Palatine, 14 years ago in one of the state’s most recent notorious crimes. Luna was sentenced earlier this month to life in prison and his motion for a new trial was rejected.
