Sideman & Bancroft, a nationally known tax and white-collar boutique, scored a major catch with Jay R. Weill, top tax prosecutor for the U.S. attorney’s office in Northern California since 1982. Weill has served 25 years as chief of the tax division in the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco. He left his post to join the 26-lawyer San Francisco firm starting in September. He has prosecuted a wide spectrum of tax fraud, evasion, money laundering and structuring cases, as well as civil tax-related matters over the years. He also acted as liaison between the IRS criminal investigation arm and the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco. His focus with Sideman will be criminal and civil tax controversies, according to Richard Sideman, co-founder of the firm. “There is no lawyer with his depth of knowledge in Northern California, and probably the entire state,” said Sideman. “He brings an enormous amount of expertise to the firm.” Sideman described Weill as a “natural fit” with the firm, which began as a combination of defense of tax prosecutions and white-collar criminal defense. He said the firm has four lawyers exclusively working on criminal and civil tax controversies. Weill will join a firm that has its roots in the Justice Department. David Bancroft was head of the anti-terrorism office in San Francisco’s U.S. attorneys office in the 1970s, going after Black Liberation Army, the paramilitary wing of the Black Panthers. He also worked in Washington, D.C. on racketeering prosecutions. Sideman spent 12 years as a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C. and in San Francisco in its tax division prior to founding the firm. Weill left the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco earlier this month.
