LOS ANGELES — The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles has tapped a new executive director after six months under an interim manager. Mario Salgado, an independent consultant and former vice president of Vanguard Public Foundation in San Francisco, will become the new executive director of LAFLA on Sept. 17. A Columbian immigrant, Salgado has spent much of his career in California. Out of college, he worked for the San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Service. In 1987, he was appointed to become executive director of La Raza Centro Legal in San Francisco. After that, Salgado joined the National Economic Development and Law Center, where he was in charge of a Ford Foundation-funded national program that provided training to legal aid attorneys. He joined the Vanguard Public Foundation in 1998 and started his own consulting firm, Salgado and Associates, two years later. On Jan. 2, LAFLA’s former executive director, Victor Geminiani, resigned for personal and family reasons after about a year on the job. Before joining LAFLA, Geminiani had served for a decade as the executive director of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii. Toby J. Rothschild, general counsel of LAFLA since 2001, has been serving as executive director on an interim basis. LAFLA, which provides legal assistance to low-income families, serves 13,000 clients annually.
