Philadelphia-based Duane Morris is expanding further into the Asian market by opening offices in Vietnam. The firm announced last week that it had established offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, a move that few other U.S. firms have taken. “I believe we’re on the ground floor there,” says Douglas Woloshin, the managing partner of the firm’s D.C. office, who helped initiate the move. He says the decision was spun out of the opening of the firm’s Singapore office earlier this year and the realization that there is potential for new business in Vietnam. The country just gained admission into the World Trade Organization late last year and has begun revising its business practices, opening the door for private companies. “There’s lots of legal activity and legal services needed,” says Woloshin, adding, “It’s a natural springboard from our Singapore office in that Singapore is one of the largest investors in Vietnam.” The Vietnam offices are, at the moment, staffed by partners Christopher Muessel and Oliver Massmann, counsel Giles Cooper, and two associates. Woloshin says the offices will focus on corporate project finance, mergers and acquisitions, and cross-border transactions Currently, Baker & McKenzie has offices in the Southeast Asian nation, and White & Case still practices in the country, despite closing its office there last year.
