Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is mourning the loss of Peter Murphy, a partner in the firm’s environment and natural resources group. Murphy, 42, died from heart complications while on vacation with his wife and friends in Cancun, Mexico. At the firm, Murphy played an active role as a litigator and as an adviser to his clients in all areas of environmental law. He specialized in litigation and regulatory matters under various federal statutes, including the Clean Water Act and the Superfund program. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, Murphy spent the early part of his career as an assistant to the general counsel of the Department of the Army. He joined Gibson Dunn in 1994. “We are saddened by the loss of our friend and partner and extend our warmest sympathy to his family,” says Mark Perry, the co-partner-in-charge of the D.C. office. A huge soccer fan, Murphy also coached a Vienna, Va., youth soccer team, and his family has set up a fund in his name through the league. He is survived by his wife, Sheila, and his three children.
