Torts expert Catherine Sharkey will join the faculty this fall at New York University Law School from Columbia Law School. Focusing her scholarship on torts, punitive damages and class actions, Sharkey is a Rhodes Scholar and a former clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter. She joined Columbia’s faculty in 2003 and received her juris doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1997. She also has a master of science in economics for development from Oxford University. Sharkey is one of four Columbia Law School tenured faculty members who have joined New York University in the last two years. Jeremy Waldron, a legal and political philosophy scholar, moved in March 2006. In February 2006, Cynthia Estlund, a labor and employment law scholar, made the switch, as did Samuel Issacharoff, a scholar in law and the political process, in April 2005. Job hopping has grown increasingly common among elite schools as they compete for top scholars. Despite its recent departures, Columbia and Harvard Law School both aggressively have sought in recent years to boost their faculty numbers, which has caused job movement at other highly ranked schools.
