BOSTON – Bingham McCutchen announced plans to acquire a 22-lawyer Tokyo lawfirm, which will bring the firm’s headcount above 50 in Japan. The combination with New Tokyo International Law Office is Bingham’s second Japanese acquisition thisyear. In February, Bingham combined with another 22-lawyer Tokyorestructuring law firm Sakai & Mimura. New Tokyo, an insolvency, corporate and litigationfirm, will increase Bingham’s cross-border restructuring, insolvency andcorporate finance capacity in Asia. “We’re creating a client-driven leading restructuring, financial servicesand corporate firm with solid resources in Japan, further expandingBingham’s global reach,” said Bingham Chairman Jay S. Zimmerman. Bingham’s Tokyo office recently represented Calpis Co. in its $900million acquisition by Ajinomoto, two major players in Japan’s food andbeverage industry. This fall, Bingham’s first year class will include 10 new Japanese lawyersat its Tokyo office. When the New Toyko combination closes, around October 1, Bingham will havemore than 50 Japanese lawyers (bengoshi) and six foreign lawyers.
