Michigan state lawmakers on Tuesday debated legislation that would protect workers from getting fired, or not being hired, for their legal off-duty activities. The issue first came up two years ago when four workers lost their jobs at a Michigan company, which administers health benefits, because they did not quit smoking outside of work. The bill includes exceptions where a worker's legal activities interfere with a bona fide job requirement or create a conflict with a company's core mission.
