Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal continued to build its West Coast IP practice Monday, announcing the addition of patent attorney Dale Hunt and two IP associates to its San Francisco office. The Chicago-based firm opened a Silicon Valley office earlier this year with the addition of an IP lawyer from Weil, Gotshal & Manges and last month added IP lawyer Rudy Kim as a partner from Irell & Manella. Hunt comes to the 700-lawyer Sonnenschein from the regional 180-lawyer, IP-focused Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear firm, where he was a partner. “I was intrigued by the idea of working with a full-service national firm,” he said. Hunt, who represents biotech and cleantech companies in their patent matters, said he will be bringing most of his business to Sonnenschein. That includes Southern California biopharmaceutical company MannKind Corp. as well as serial start-up artists XL TechGroup. Hunt said that while it is rare for an attorney to leave Knobbe, the combination of Sonnenschein’s offices all over the country and the firm’s commitment to IP proved to be too enticing. “Dale Hunt is an important and exciting addition to our IP practice,” said Paul Glad, Sonnenschein’s San Francisco managing partner. “He has unique life sciences expertise and meaningful patent experience on behalf of a variety of drug and life sciences companies.” Joining Hunt are senior Knobbe associate Sheila Gibson and her husband, associate Hal Gibson from Krause Kalfayan Benink & Slavens.
