To the editor: Edward Blum’s commentary on the “ Ashcroft fix” and the Voting Rights Act (“ The Ashcroft Fix Is In,” May 21, Page 68) could have been published in The Onion as a parody of right-wing think-tank nonsense. First, one thing that Blum fails to discuss is the need for minority representation in Congress, which is the purpose of the Voting Rights Act. Our adventure in Iraq shows how important it is to a country as a whole to enfranchise minorities. Blum could not care less. Second, Blum assumes that a Democratic president will select an “aggressively partisan attorney general.” Democrats have not proven very good at doing that. Blum must be thinking of the Bush administration. Stephen Kaus Berkeley, Calif.
