As I write this, I’m sitting at my desk listening to Jackson Browne’s “Lawyers in Love.” This means several things, that I am: a) very old (one of our twentysomething reporters remarked “Jackson Who?”); b) I’m an impulse buyer on iTunes (I really needed to hear “Baba O’ Riley” again?); and c) I’m searching for a theme for this year’s D.C. 20. Here’s my take: It’s always less fun for those who chronicle the lives of large law firms when a year goes by as smoothly as 2006 did for the D.C. legal marketplace. For the most part, everything is going swimmingly. ( See the firm profiles.) Revenues are up across the board and profits per partner keep rising. (The only ones who may not be so thrilled are the ever-growing numbers of nonequity partners. See our story.) Another sign of fiscal health perhaps is that no large firm from this region saw the need to merge with another last year. This means that while lawyers may be in love (with their prosperity, at least), their firms aren’t falling in love with each other. But fortune, like love, is fickle. So things could change in the rest of 2007. From our perspective, let the flirting begin. James Oliphant
