After 21 years as the first assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, Kenneth Melson is getting a promotion. Late last week, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales named Melson the new director of the Justice Department’s Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys. In his new job, Melson will report to an old boss: Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, who was U.S. attorney for the Eastern District from 2001 to 2005. EOUSA, as it’s known, has risen in stature in recent years through its budgetary influence over each of the nation’s 94 U.S. attorney’s offices. Melson replaces Michael Battle, the former EOUSA chief who was given the task of calling each of the eight fired U.S. attorneys last year to give them the news that their services were no longer required.
