Simpson Thacher & Bartlett announced a new Beijing office with seven lawyers. Douglas Markel, an M&A lawyer based in China who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, is joining to lead the firm’s China practice. Markel was previously a partner at London-based Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to help Simpson Thacher further grow its China practice,” Markel said. Simpson’s chairman Pete Ruegger said Markel’s experience will enhance the firm’s M&A capabilities in China and throughout the region. The other attorneys in Beijing include resident partner Chris Lin, who has more than 15 years experience on China-related transactions and M&A attorney Shaolin Luo. Many of the firm’s Hong Kong-based partners, including capital markets expert Leiming Chen, spend significant time in Beijing and are part of the firm’s China team. The New York-based firm also has Asian offices in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
