CHICAGO — The Chicago Bar Foundation said it has raised $900,000 to help support legal aid workers in Chicago after a three-week fundraising campaign earlier this year that took in funds from 28 law firms and six corporate legal departments. The funds will provide special grants to Chicago’s pro bono and legal aid attorneys, many of whom an Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice study found were likely to leave their posts in the next three years because of financial pressures from low pay and high law school debt. The study said losing 10 percent of the attorneys over a year would give 10,000 fewer low-income Chicagoans access to legal services. The funding is expected to raise the average salary of the city’s legal aid attorneys by about 8 percent to 10 percent, Jenner & Block attorney and campaign chair Anton Valukas said in a release. Law firms that contributed include Baker & McKenzie; Bell, Boyd & Lloyd; DLA Piper; Foley & Lardner; Jenner & Block; Morgan Lewis & Bockius; Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal; and Winston & Strawn, among others. Legal departments included those at AT&T Midwest; Aon Corp.; and Exelon Corp.
