R. Nils Olsen, dean of the University at Buffalo School of Law since 1998, announced yesterday that he will step down in December to attend to “personal and family health issues,” according to a written statement. He expects to resume teaching civil procedure in the fall 2008 term, as well as continue research in federal post-conviction remedies and environmental policy. The 18th dean of Buffalo Law, Olsen, 58, also has served as vice dean for academic affairs and head of clinical studies. During his tenure, he led a capital campaign that exceeded its $12 million goal and saw the student population increase by 25 percent. Olsen joined the Buffalo Law faculty in 1978 after serving as a law lecturer and clinical fellow at the University of Chicago School of Law. Satish K. Tripathi, provost of the University at Buffalo, said a national search for a new dean would commence next month.
