The D.C. Bar Foundation has given out nearly $2.9 million in grants to legal-services providers in the District. The 15 grants, finalized and made public last week, are the first influx of public funding for civil legal aid from the D.C. Council. At the behest of the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, the city earmarked $3.2 million in this year’s budget to help thousands of people in the city gain access to legal representation. Some of the grants include $500,000 to fund an on-site attorney at the Landlord and Tenant Court and $295,000 to pay interpreters. Women Empowered Against Violence received $264,000 to provide lawyers at the new Victim Services Center in Fort Totten, and Bread for the City was awarded $45,000 to upgrade the computer system at the group’s Southeast site. According to Katherine Garrett, executive director of the Bar Foundation, the organization received 22 proposals from 16 legal-services providers. “We did extensive reviews,” says Garrett, “and interviewed each of the applicants in-depth about the proposal and what they thought their proposal could bring to the community.”
