BELL, BOYD & LLOYD Kevin Spivak, 37, has joined Bell, Boyd & Lloyd as a partner in the intellectual property group. Spivak, who represents domestic and global technology companies, specializes in securing and developing intellectual property rights for a variety of industries, including semiconductors, networks, and Internet applications. Previously, Spivak was of counsel in Morrison & Foerster’s Northern Virginia office, and he earned his law degree from American University, Washington College of Law.
HOWREY Cono Carrano has joined Howrey’s intellectual property group as a partner. Carrano, 45, focuses on complex patent litigation, involving semiconductors, electronics, software, wireless, and optic technology and represents clients in both state and federal court and before the International Trade Commission. Previously, he co-chaired the IP litigation group at Dewey Ballantine, and he also practiced at Howrey until 2000. Carrano earned his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law.
LORENGER & CARNELL Two partners from Hogan & Hartson’s Northern Virginia office have formed the firm Lorenger & Carnell in Alexandria. Susanne Carnell practices employment litigation. She represents companies in counseling, investigations, arbitration, negotiations, and at trial and also handles complex employment issues involving state and federal regulations. Prior to Hogan & Hartson, Carnell, 34, was an associate at Covington & Burling. She received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. Michael Lorenger, 38, focuses on employment litigation and counseling. Lorenger represents employers before both state and federal agencies as well as in state and federal courts and advises clients on executive employment agreements, discrimination matters, and compliance. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
MICHELE ZAVOS LAW GROUP Two attorneys have joined the Michele Zavos Law Group. Nan Hooven, who is special counsel, concentrates on permanency planning for children through adoption, guardianship, and custody. Previously, Hooven, 56, was the director of the Family Permanency Project of the Children’s Law Center. She received her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Emily Russell, an associate, focuses on family law litigation. Previously, Russell, 26, worked at the firm as a law clerk. She earned her law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.
SKADDEN, ARPS, SLATE, MEAGHER & FLOM Seven counsel have made partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Joseph Barloon focuses on civil and criminal litigation as well as government enforcement. Barloon, 40, assists clients with internal and government investigations, providing compliance advice in financial services and internal controls matters. Prior to joining the firm in 1997, he clerked for Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit Court. Barloon received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. Glen Bernstein, 40, practices in the energy regulatory group and concentrates on electric utility regulation and deregulation with an emphasis on transmission and interconnection access, rates, and electricity markets. Bernstein, who joined in 2000, was previously an associate with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. He earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Jamie Boucher specializes in the mergers and acquisitions of financial institutions as well as regulatory and enforcement matters. Boucher, 44, represents U.S. and foreign banks, thrifts, securities, and insurance and investment companies. Before joining in 1998, she was an associate at McKenna & Cuneo, and she graduated from Georgetown University Law Center. Jeffrey Gerrish practices in the international trade group and focuses on international trade litigation and policy. Gerrish represents clients in anti-dumping and countervailing duty cases before federal agencies and in the courts. Prior to joining the firm in 2000, Gerrish, 37, was an associate at Arnold & Porter. He earned his J.D. from Duke University School of Law. Paul Kraske, 36, practices in the firm’s energy project finance and development section where he handles transactional energy issues for independent energy companies, utilities, and financial institutions. Kraske joined the firm in 1996 as an associate, and also worked as general counsel to the Dabhol Power Co. in Mumbai, India, for two years, assisting the company in renegotiation and construction matters. He graduated from Harvard Law School. John Lyons, 46, focuses on antitrust litigation and compliance with an emphasis on government investigations and financial issues. Lyons, who joined the firm in 1995, represents clients in the energy, chemical, technology, and securities industries. He earned his law degree from American University, Washington College of Law. Anand Raman represents corporate clients in enforcement investigations and litigation as well as civil and class action litigation, and he counsels companies on compliance and internal investigations. Before joining in 1996, Raman, 38, clerked for Judge Patricia Wald of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit Court. He graduated from Yale Law School. — Attila Berry
