Chicago Northwestern University School of Law and the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law this month start teaching the first courses of a masters of law degree program in Israel. It’s the third such international law degree program set up by Northwestern in addition to those in Madrid, Spain, and Seoul, Korea. There are 37 Israelis with law degrees from their own country enrolled in the program, including judges, government officials, public-interest lawyers, said Mayer Freed, who is the associate dean of academic affairs and curriculum at Northwestern. The program grew out of a decade-long relationship between Northwestern and the Tel Aviv law school that until now has included exchanging students and faculty and joining together for conferences, he said. Unlike the other two Northwestern programs, which focus on business law, this one will provide a dual degree in public and international law. Students in the program will study for the yearlong program in both the U.S. and Israel. In the future, Northwestern may also have a program in China. The law school has explored setting up a program in Shanghai, but so far hasn’t found the right formula for establishing itself under the more highly regulated Chinese process, Freed said.
