Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ recent emotional interview with BusinessWeek is still reverberating in Supreme Court circles. His anger about the “lie” that he was recruited at Holy Cross College or was a beneficiary of affirmative action came through starkly. “That was the creation of the politicians, the people with a lot of mouth and nothing to say, and your industry,” Thomas told BW senior writer Diane Brady. He also called the news media “universally untrustworthy” for their preconceived notions about him. But the strong words were no surprise to Kevin Merida, whose biography of Thomas, co-authored with fellow Washington Post staffer Michael Fletcher, is due out in April. The authors couldn’t convince Thomas to agree to an interview. Titled Supreme Discomfort, the book charts the grievances and contradictions of Thomas’ life. “We think in some ways that his racial identity is his most important identity,” Merida says. After years of delays, Thomas’ own book, My Grandfather’s Son, is due to be published in October, according to his agent’s Web site.
