With 2007 being cued up as the year of the congressional subpoena, longtime Republican spinsters Mark Corallo and Barbara Comstock are getting the band back together. Corallo and Comstock have founded Corallo Comstock Inc., a crisis management firm they say will open right after the new year — just before Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) gavels in the 2007 Congress. Pelosi has put Capitol Hill on notice that everything from Medicare bills to military spending will be scrutinized. “This is an opportunity to be political and get paid, and those jobs aren’t always around for a lawyer,” says Comstock, a former partner with Blank Rome’s D.C. office. Corallo, who recently was leading a communications firm in Arlington, Va., says the pair has “a deep reservoir of experience when it comes to crisis communications.” The duo first worked together on the House Government Reform Committee under then-Chairman Dan Burton (R-Ind.), who spearheaded the congressional investigation into fund raising by President Bill Clinton during 1996 election. They also filled communications roles for then-Attorney General John Ashcroft and, later, for Bush administration officials Karl Rove and Scooter Libby. Comstock says she’ll also work as a consultant for Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), who is contemplating a 2008 presidential run.
