Everybody’s making holiday lists, and so are we. In the spirit of the season, we’re offering up two. First is a list of books that make great gifts for new lawyers, which comes courtesy of the experts at The Capitol.Net, an affiliate of Congressional Quarterly in Washington. The second is a selection of humor books ( and a nutty CD) for the not-so-new and jaded practitioners who could use a good laugh. FOR JUNIOR Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers (Communication Series) Keith Evans TheCapitolNet./$35 “As Roxanne Barton Conlin (the first female president of ATLA) said, “If new advocates could have only one how-to book this would be it.” McElhaney’s Trial Notebook, 4th ed. James W. McElhaney American Bar Association/$64.95 “The latest edition of a classic.” Black’s Law Dictionary, 8th ed. Bryan A. Garner Thomson West/$66. Garner Oxford University Press/$30. “This guide to legal writing will become more valuable over time.” How to Start & Build a Law Practice, 5th edition Jay G. Foonberg American Bar Association/$69.95. “If you’re thinking of going out on your own, Foonberg’s book is essential.” Rain Making: The Professional’s Guide to Attracting New Clients Ford Harding Bob Adams Inc. Lawyers Jokes, Quotes, and Anecdotes Stark Books/$9.95 From “longtime practitioner” Jack Maybrick: “A number of the humorous observations in here are actually directed against the principals in the legal system, rather than the practitioners. No one has yet been able to discover a single instance of a lawyer putting a gun to a litigant’s head and forcing him to retain counsel, and as Gore Vidal observes, ‘For certain people after fifty, litigation takes the place of sex.’” Amicus Humoriae An Anthology of Legal Humor Robert Jarvis, Thomas E. Baker and Andrew McClurg. Carolina Academic Press/$25 Funny law review articles picked by three law professors. “‘Hello to law reviews!’ If they seem like a vast literary desert, this is the oasis we’ve been looking for.” Bryan A. Garner Lawyers and Other Reptiles Jess M. Brallier McGraw-Hill/$12 A compendium of jokes and anecdotes from the popular author of more than 20 books. Lowering the Bar: Lawyer Jokes and Legal Culture Marc Galanter. University of Wisconsin Press/$45 The Wisconsin law professor explores the meanings behind this venerable genre of American humor. “A tour de force. The classic collection of lawyer jokes and analysis.” the late Alan Dundes, UC folklore professor There’s No Justice Just Court Costs No Noose Is Good Noose Has My Lawyer Called Yet? Lawrence B. He sometimes conducts a legal education seminar called, “The Use of Humor in the Practice of Law as a Means of Decreasing Stress.” Innocent Your Honor: A Book of Lawyer Cartoons Danny Shanahan Harry N. Abrams/$19.95 Longtime New Yorker cartoonist takes on the litigious life. You May Not Tie an Alligator to a Fire Hydrant 101 Real Dumb Laws Jeff Koon and Andy Powell Free Press/$12.95 This is a not-to-be-taken too seriously compilation of actual laws (for example, in Oklahoma, buying hamburgers as takeout is not allowed on Sundays) by a couple of enterprising teenagers. It started as a school project, and now there’s a Web site and a board game (Real Dumb Laws). The Lawyer’s Holiday Humor Album Legal Holidaze Merry Lexmas Lawrence Savell LawTunes/17.99 Featuring songs like “Another Billable Christmas” and “Ridin on a Red Eye With Santa on Christmas Eve,” Chadbourne & Parke counsel Lawrence Savell has gone where few dare to go: setting legal lyrics to holiday music and doing it annually. A guitarist, keyboardist and singer, Savell was interviewed by TimeOut New York earlier this year: “The counselor first played for audiences at University of Michigan talent shows, while attending law school there in the early ’80s, but he fully unleashed his inner rock monster only after joining Chadbourne. ‘It’s a pretty traditional firm,’ he acknowledges, ‘and I didn’t think there’d by any chance of doing anything with my music there. But I got a tremendous reaction when I performed at our holiday office party. I was surprised because I thought they’d sue me.’”
