UPDATES Cozen O’Connor has appointed Sandra Schultz Newman, the first woman elected to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, to head its appellate practice. Newman, who has served on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania since 1995, will oversee the firm�s 50-lawyer practice in Philadelphia. She will join the firm January 1. Los Angeles–Thaddeus Stauber, former general counsel of the Los AngelesCounty Museum of Art, joins Nixon Peabody as partner in the Los Angelesoffice. He was most recently of counsel at Sidley Austin. Chicago-based Schiff Hardin named Robert H. Riley, 52, as chairman of thefirm. Riley will succeed Peter V. Fazio, Jr., 66, who stepped down from theposition after leaving the executive committee last year when he turned 65.Riley, who leads the firm’s product liability group, will provide ‘strategicvision and direction’ for the firm, Managing Partner and Chief ExecutiveOfficer Ronald Safer said in a statement. The 142-year-old firm has doubledin size over the past decade and now has about 360 attorneys. Nixon Peabody partner Elizabeth Moore and Constantine Cannon partner LloydConstantine will serve as two of the six co-chairs for New YorkGovernor-elect Elliott Spitzer’s transition team. Moore concentrates her lawpractice on advising companies about state and federal labor laws. Cannon,chairman of Constantine Cannon, a New York commercial litigation firm, holdsparticular expertise in antitrust litigation. Spitzer, a Democrat currentlyserving as the New York State Attorney General, beat Republican opponentJohn Faso in the Nov. 7 election. New partners Donovan Hatem (Boston): Marianne E. Brown comes on board as partner. She was previously of counsel to Dilworth Paxson in Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham: Bruce J. Kahne joins the hedge funds practice as partner in the firm’s New York office. He was previously counsel to Seward & Kissel of New York. New counsel Akerman Senterfitt (Orlando, Fla.): Three attorneys come on board as of counsel-in Washington, Kyle M. Mulhall (government affairs) and Guy D. Singer (litigation), and in Jacksonville, Fla., Edward M. Whelan (litigation). Mulhall was chief legal officer at Catapult Technology Ltd., an information technology services provider to the federal government. Singer was previously an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice. Whelan was a partner at McGuireWoods of Richmond, Va. Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett (Minneapolis): Robert A. Stein joins the estate planning practice as of counsel to the firm’s Minneapolis office. He was previously executive director and chief operating officer of the American Bar Association. Before that he was dean of the University of Minnesota Law School. Hiscock & Barclay (Syracuse, N.Y.): David E. Blabey comes on board as of counsel to the firm’s Albany, N.Y., office. He was previously executive vice president, secretary and general counsel of the New York Power Authority. Tonkon Torp (Portland, Ore.): Paula Holm Jensen joins as co-chairwoman of the intellectual property practice group. She most recently was principal of Holm Jensen Law. Warner Norcross & Judd (Grand Rapids, Mich.): Steven A. Palazzolo joins the labor and employment practice as senior counsel to the firm’s Grand Rapids office. He was previously a labor and employment attorney for Alticor Inc. Laterals Chadbourne & Parke (New York): Adrian M. Harris joins the bankruptcy and financial restructuring group as partner in the firm’s London office. He was head of European insolvency and restructuring at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Chapman and Cutler (Chicago): Thomas M. White joins the employee benefits practice as partner in the firm’s Chicago office. He was previously a partner at Chicago’s Schwartz Cooper.
