D.C. BAR Tom Mason was elected to serve a three-year term on the D.C. Bar Legal Ethics Committee by the D.C. Bar Board of Governors. Mason also serves on the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee. The Legal Ethics Committee issues opinions interpreting the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Code of Professional Responsibility. Mason is a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder, where he focuses on white-collar criminal defense, civil forfeitures, attorney disciplinary proceedings, and complex civil litigation.
MARYLAND BAR ASSOCIATIONS David Shapiro was elected co-chairman of the Business Law Section of the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Md. Shapiro is a partner in Paley Rothman’s business and commercial transactions, health law and employment law practice groups. Debbie Cohn, an estate planning partner at Paley, was appointed to a term on the section council for the Estate and Trust Law Section of the Maryland State Bar Association.
MIDDLE EAST INSTITUTE Susan Bastress was selected to serve on the Board of Governors for the Middle East Institute, which is a D.C.-based nonprofit organization that works to promote knowledge of Middle Eastern culture and government. Bastress’ Middle East experience comes from several years of living and working in the region. She was managing partner of Patton Boggs’ Doha, Qatar, office and was the first non-Qatari lawyer officially licensed to practice law in Qatar. In early 2006, Bastress returned to Washington as the firm’s Middle East regional coordinator. In that role she continues to represent clients in Qatar and the region, focusing on construction, commercial real estate, and corporate transactions. — Nathan Carlile
