To the editor: An article in the Aug. 14, 2006, edition of Legal Times badly misdescribed my involvement in the senatorial campaign in Connecticut ["And There's More . . ." Page 13]. I spoke at length with your reporter, Nathan Carlile, after explaining that I first wanted to speak off the record, but that if he wanted to use anything I said, he should just ask me and in all likelihood a quotation would be fine. Mr. Carlile reported that I “declined to comment.” That was false. Mr. Carlile reported that I “heckled” [Democratic candidate] Ned Lamont, a phrase also used by the bloggers/propagandists who did not like the fact that their man Lamont was asked questions that he would rather not face in public. He was working a tiny diner (three booths in all), and when he came to my booth, I asked him several questions. I sat in a booth while he stood. I did not heckle him. Finally, Mr. Carlile implied that I tried to disrupt multiple appearances by Lamont. False again. The only other time Lamont and I were in the same place was at a rally the next day, when the only people I spoke to were journalists. Richard F. Goodstein Goodstein and Associates Washington, D.C.
Editor’s note: Legal Times stands behind our story, including the description of our reporter’s conversation with Mr. Goodstein.
