Most lawyers at larger law firms eventually find themselves involved in one or more “mega-projects.” These are long-running projects, often out of town, that can occupy all of a lawyer’s time, for weeks, months, and in some cases even years. These projects can be tremendous sources of learning and satisfaction (if successful), and may be pivotal to some lawyers’ careers. Yet, the question often arises, after the mega-project is completed, “what next?” What should you do, after you come up for air from the depths of the mega-project? The great temptation is to see the end of a large project as a problem, as a gap to be filled as soon as possible. After all, this project has structured your life for some time, it has provided you with a steady source of billable hours, and it may even define who you are as a lawyer. But you should resist the temptation to immediately begin searching for the next mega-project to attach yourself to. Instead, spend at least a little time in contemplation. Ask yourself:
