Smithfield Foods Inc.’s effort to digest a rival pork producer has become a food fight, as a coalition of consumer and farming organizations are begging the Department of Justice to scrutinize the deal for antitrust concerns.
Regulators in Washington have historically had problems when dealing with large agricultural mergers, and they seem to have a full plate with this one, since legislators on Capitol Hill have already announced a desire to hold hearings on the deal.
