Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham announced Monday that it was in merger discussions with Seattle-based Preston Gates & Ellis. The combined firm would have about 1,400 attorneys and would give 1,000-attorney Kirkpatrick & Lockhart a significant Asian presence. The two firms have been in talks since July and they expect to present the merger proposal to their partners before the end of the year. The combined firm would include 21 offices in North America, Europe and Asia. Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, with its largest office in Pittsburgh, merged with London-based Nicholson Graham & Jones in January 2005.
