I see Linda Hirshman is a graduate of the University of Chicago so I understand her natural instinct to reach for a marketplace metaphor [ "Why do women go to law school?", Ad Hominem, Sept. 8]. However, in the Bake Sale Marketplace of Ideas I feel her proposal to exact payment from persons who at some future measurement date are not using their law degree in a traditional manner is half-baked (or perhaps I should write not baked through). There are many lay people (as opposed to lawyers seeking employment) who would consider it a good thing that many law school seats are filled by persons who will not long remain in the profession and clog our courts with all those frivolous torts that constrain our free-market system. Also, while I don’t recall the names, I do recall that several years ago it was discovered that a wife took a bar exam for her husband who had previously failed it. Surely there are many male law students who would be quite happy to grant a MRS to a woman of such selflessness. Finally, consider these lines from Lewis Carroll’s “You are old Father William”: “ In my youth,” said his father, “ I took to the law, And argued each case with my wife; And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw, Has lasted the rest of my life.” I do not think Ms. (I assume not MRS) Hirshman has considered the indirect benefit to the legal marketplace if such wives also have a J.D. in addition to the MRS.
