Hogan & Hartson prevailed in D.C. Superior Court last week, when a jury awarded more than $180,000 to the firm after a client refused to pay his legal tab. Hogan filed suit on behalf of partner Steven Hollman, who represented realtor John Beard in a dispute over the ownership of a Georgetown town house he had purchased with his ex-fiancee. “I felt the principle was so important and the outcome so, sort of, without doubt, in view of what the firm did for him, that I thought it was really important to make a statement,” says Hollman. Hogan sought payment for about $137,000 Beard owed the firm, along with interest and attorney fees. Beard had also filed a counterclaim alleging malpractice and an ethics violation for “overlawyering” the case. After deliberating for less than two hours, the jury found that Hogan was not negligent in its representation of Beard. Beard’s attorney, solo practitioner John Perazich, did not return calls.
