Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman lost three lawyers in its prized global-outsourcing practice. Partners Trevor Nagel and Lee Van Blerkom as well as senior associate Norman Fry moved to Alston & Bird on July 1. “This is a big step for us to expand our global reach,” says Frank “Rusty” Conner III, head of Alston & Bird’s D.C. office. “The strategic emphasis of the firm is to continue to grow in the Northeast Corridor in New York and Washington.” . . . William Webster, former head of the CIA and the FBI, was named chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff last week. He also has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. Webster, a consulting partner at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, is currently vice chair of the council. Webster says the group has been focusing on the future of terrorism and ways to make the Department of Homeland Security more cohesive. . . . Atlanta-based Troutman Sanders’ Sean Connaughton is also hoping to move up the food chain in government service. Connaughton, Prince William Board of County Supervisors chairman, was nominated by President George W. Bush to head the U.S. Maritime Administration.
