Upon being voted president-elect of the District of Columbia Bar, Melvin White, a partner at McDermott, Will & Emery, said one of his initiatives will be to mirror the culture of the city. He may have some work to do in one respect: voter apathy. Washington is decidedly a political town. But D.C. Bar members appear intent on mimicking the general voting population during a presidential election. Actually, that’s unfair. In 2004, 54 percent of District voters turned out at the polls. With only a 13 percent turnout, the bar election more closely resembled a student council primary. White will begin serving as president-elect for the 2006-07 term under James Sandman, a partner at Arnold & Porter, who will take office as president on June 22. White is an incumbent on the bar’s board of governors, co-chair of the board of directors of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and a member of the National Bar Association and the D.C. Women’s Bar Association.
