AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION The American Bar Association has announced Debevoise & Plimpton will receive one of its 2006 Pro Bono Publico Awards. Each year, at an awards luncheon, the ABA honors five lawyers and firms that show dedication to pro bono work. This August the ceremony will be held in Hawaii. Recently, Debevoise has taken on a number of individual rights cases, including an appeal for a Mexican citizen on death row in Texas.
AMERICAN INNS OF COURT PROFESSIONALISM AWARD Betty Southard Murphy, a partner in Baker & Hostetler’s D.C. office, has received the American Inns of Court Professionalism Award. The American Inns of Court bestows the award annually in recognition of a lifetime of dedication to and integrity in the legal profession. Murphy was honored at last week’s Judicial Conference for the D.C. Circuit. A trial veteran who has appeared before the Supreme Court, nine federal appeals courts, and state and federal courts in more than 25 states, she has also earned seven presidential appointments, including as chairwoman of the National Labor Relations Board and administrator of the Labor Department’s wage and hour division.
PALEY ROTHMAN Three Paley Rothman attorneys have recently been honored with awards and appointments. Linda Schwartz, a partner at the firm, was elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. Kathleen Dumais, a family law and litigation partner, received the 17th Annual Professionalism Award from the Bar Association of Montgomery County in Maryland. James Hammerschmidt, a litigation and employment law partner, was elected to a two-year term on the Bar Association of Montgomery County’s Executive Committee.
PAUL BERNICK NEW LEADERSHIP AWARD Raymond Sherbill, a partner at Ridberg Sherbill & Aronson in Bethesda, Md., has received the 2005 Paul Bernick New Leadership Award from the Jewish educational nonprofit American ORT. The award is given to an individual who displays leadership within the organization. As a member of the board of directors for American ORT’s D.C. chapter, Sherbill started a “Create a Friend” project connecting local children with Israeli peers. — Gabe Nelson
