The Recorder has won three awards in the annual newspaper contest sponsored by The Associated Press. Senior writer Brenda Sandburg won second place for business writing for “ Mopping Up,” a feature about Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison bankruptcy trustee Ronald Greenspan and his strategy for recovering millions of dollars from ex-Brobeck partners. Sandburg has since joined the staff of The American Lawyer, a Recorder affiliate in New York. The Recorder also won two awards for photography. Photo editor Jason Doiy won second place in the business photo category for his portrait of Cisco IP lawyer Mallun Yen. Regular freelance photographer Christine Jegan won second place in the portrait category for her photo of Steven DeCaprio, a homeless man attempting to take over a vacant Berkeley house via adverse possession. “Compelling photography is one of the elements that sets us apart from our competition,” Recorder Editor-in-Chief Scott Graham said. “I’m pleased that Jason’s and Christine’s artistic talents are being recognized by their peers.” The Recorder competed against newspapers of less than 25,000 circulation in the Associated Press News Executive Council contest, which recognized the best newspaper writing and photography in California and Nevada in 2005.
