A $176.8 million jury verdict was omitted from the VerdictSearch Top 100 Verdicts of 2005, published on Feb. 20 in The National Law Journal. The case, Banco Intercontinental S.A. v. Alvarez Renta, No. 04-20727-CIV-Martinez-Bandstra (S.D. Fla.), should have been No. 9 on the list. The plaintiff, a Dominican Republic government commission seeking to recover losses from the 2003 collapse of that nation’s third-largest bank, accused financier Luis Alvarez Renta of conspiracy and receiving fraudulent money transfers. The jury returned a plaintiffs’ verdict on Nov. 7, 2005, of nearly $59 million, which was trebled on Nov. 23 under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The outcome is under appeal. Plaintiffs’ co-counsel were Matias R. Dorta and Bryan T. West of Tew Cardenas in Miami. The defense attorneys were Carol A. Licko of Hogan & Hartson’s Miami office; Richard C. Smith of Shook, Hardy & Bacon’s Miami office; and A.J. Barranco of Barranco, Kircher & Vogelsang in Miami.
