Attach the name Douglas Hastings to a transaction and clients can relax. “He has done this so much that he’s a wealth of knowledge and advice,” says Megan Arthur, senior vice president and general counsel for the University of Maryland Medical System. With Hastings’ counsel, the medical system acquired Baltimore Washington Medical Center, in 2000. “He is an authority in this field,” adds Arthur. “And though they would never admit this, I think the other side takes comfort in knowing he’s there.” Where he’s been for the past 25 years is the D.C. office of Epstein Becker & Green. As chair of the firm’s steering committee for the health care and life sciences group, Hastings heads a premier practice set squarely in the middle of a booming industry. Sixty health care and life sciences lawyers are based in the firm’s D.C. office, with another 58 in Epstein’s other branches. And Hastings readily credits those numerous colleagues, noting that the strength of his practice is tied to that of the firm. “Life science lawyers are working in an industry,” he says. “And so some of the best work we can do is as a team.” Hastings’ own practice focuses on transactional work heavily salted with regulatory considerations. He represents academic medical centers, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and managed-care organizations, among others. “We’ve moved from a base of traditional health care to the inclusion of the life sciences industry and the integration of the two,” says Hastings, 56, about his and the firm’s practice area. Clients describe the University of Virginia law graduate as a consummate professional, able to make the complex deal seem routine and provide steady guidance in a closely supervised industry. “He’s very pragmatic,” says Arthur. “He makes sure he understands the desires and strategy and keeps that in mind. Many lawyers know you, but they don’t remember. Doug really embraces us and acts as though he’s a member of our team.” Hastings is at his best, clients say, when he is addressing the most technical parts of a large transaction while simultaneously serving as a conduit to other Epstein lawyers handling related aspects. “We were facing thousands and thousands of issues,” says Alan Wasserman, president of George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates, recalling the hospital’s incorporation as a separate entity from the university in 2000. “Doug oversaw the whole process and just methodically went about his work. He met the deadline, and not only was it done on time, but we really were prepared to take off and be independent.” In the spirit of communal good will and to encourage youth to pursue scientific careers, Epstein has teamed with Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., to fund student research. The five-year commitment is emblematic of the ways in which Hastings is pushing his health care group into the increasingly intertwined field of life sciences. “Clearly, life sciences is an important and growing component of health care,” says Hastings. “We see the worlds coming together.”
