CITIZEN ACTIVIST AWARD FORINSPIRED LEADERSHIP Julie Stewart, president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM), was presented the 2006 Citizen Activist Award for Inspired Leadership. The honor was bestowed April 3 at a ceremony at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The Los Angeles-based Gleitsman Foundation presents the award every other year to those who have challenged social injustice. Stewart says she was inspired by her brother, a nonviolent, first-time drug offender who was sentenced to five years in federal prison for growing marijuana. She founded FAMM in 1991 to challenge the penalties required by mandatory-minimum sentencing laws. FAMM has helped lead the way for legislative sentencing reforms and judicial discretion in federal drug cases for more than 45,000 drug defendants.

Pollak, senior counsel at Goodwin Proctor, was lauded for promoting better access to legal representation and advancing civil rights. He currently serves on the Access to Justice Commission, the D.C. Bar Foundation, and the Historical Society of D.C. The Legal Aid Society and its executive director, Smith, were honored for their continued service. For more than 75 years the society has provided poor people access to legal help.
