D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Eric Washington is taking his show on the road. On March 20, the court will hold an en banc hearing at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, marking the first time such a proceeding has been held outside of the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse. The change of venue is part of a community outreach program that Washington launched to give area law students the opportunity to witness live arguments. Eventually, Washington says all six area law schools will host a hearing. In Monday’s case, the judges will consider whether someone who “aids and abets” a killing can be convicted of premeditated murder even if he personally did not intend to kill the victim. And in what Washington calls sheer coincidence, one of the defense lawyers in the case, John Iweanoge Jr., is also a UDC law school alum. Washington says UDC was chosen to kick off the program because it is the city’s only public law school and as a way to “celebrate their permanent accreditation.”
