FINES FOR L.A. LAWYER APPROACH $400,000 SACRAMENTO Los Angeles trial attorney Pierce O’Donnell agreed to pay a $72,000 fine for laundering money to the campaign committee of then-mayoral candidate James Hahn, the Fair Political Practices Commission said Tuesday. Between June 2000 and April 2001, O’Donnell made 26 donations totaling $25,500 using the names of friends and employees of his firm, O’Donnell Shaeffer Mortimer, according to an agreement between the FPPC and O’Donnell. During that period, Los Angeles city law barred individuals from contributing more than $1,000 to candidates. Last month O’Donnell pleaded no contest to five misdemeanor counts related to the fraudulent campaign contributions. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ordered him to pay $155,200 in fines and penalties, placed him on three years probation, and barred him from participating in any political fund-raising for three years. The Los Angeles City Ethics Commission also fined O’Donnell $147,000 at its meeting Tuesday. A message left with O’Donnell’s attorney was not immediately returned Tuesday. O’Donnell served as lead counsel in a class action against Sempra Energy that settled for $1.9 billion. The suit accused Sempra of gaming the natural gas market during California’s energy crisis of 2000 and 2001. The city of Los Angeles was a plaintiff in the lawsuit. Cheryl Miller
