After two high-profile general counsel posts, William Rosoff is returning to the world of law firms. Most recently the GC at Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc., Rosoff joined O’Melveny & Myers as a senior partner in February. Rosoff was the legal chief at Marsh, the world’s largest insurance brokerage firm, from 2000 to 2004. He resigned in the wake of a suit by New York State attorney general Eliot Spitzer that charged Marsh with rigging bids for insurance contracts and steering clients to insurers that paid it kickbacks. According to news reports at the time, Rosoff took a contentious tack in discussions with Spitzer’s office, insisting that there had been no wrongdoing at Marsh and that the disputed practices were standard in the insurance industry. Spitzer reportedly made settlement talks contingent on the removal of Rosoff and then CEO Jeffrey Greenberg, who left Marsh shortly before Rosoff. In February 2005 Marsh settled with Spitzer’s office for $850 million. Rosoff did not reply to requests for comment for this article. Prior to joining Marsh, Rosoff had been general counsel of the former RJR Nabisco Inc., where he dealt with both tobacco litigation and a complicated restructuring in which the company spun off its Nabisco food business. He was also a partner for many years at Davis Polk & Wardwell. O’Melveny chairman Arthur Culvahouse says that he expects Rosoff, a veteran M&A lawyer, will take a leading role in developing the firm’s transactional practices in its New York office.
