COMMITTEE TO SUPPORT U.S. TRADE LAWS The Committee to Support U.S. Trade Laws appointed Laurence Lasoff as chairman of the Customs Committee. The CSUSTL is an organization of companies, trade associations, labor unions, workers, and individuals committed to preserving and enhancing U.S. trade laws for business sectors including manufacturing, technology, agriculture, mining and energy, and services. Lasoff is a partner at Collier Shannon Scott, working in the trade and customs practice.
HENRY B. BETTS AWARD John Kemp, born without arms and legs below the elbows and knees, was honored by a jury of his peers as the 2006 recipient of the Henry B. Betts Award, the most prestigious award within the national disability community. The Prince Charitable Trusts and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago created the award in 1989 to annually honor someone whose work and scope of influence have significantly improved the quality of life for people with disabilities. The award and the accompanying $50,000 unrestricted cash gift will be presented to Kemp at the 2006 The American Association of People with Disabilities Leadership Gala on March 8. A partner at Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville, Kemp has used his talents as a communicator, an executive, a volunteer, and a leader to provide professional advice to a diverse constituency, including government administrations, corporations, nonprofits, individuals, and families. Kemp has created partnerships between the nonprofit and for-profit communities to advance the issues of disability rights. Throughout his career he has served on nearly 100 national advisory boards for universities and nonprofits.
LEGAL MARKETING ASSOCIATION The Legal Marketing Association’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter appointed members to its board of directors for 2006. The association works to promote the professional standards and prestige of legal marketers in the United States and Canada and to provide educational and networking tools for the legal-marketing profession. PURSUIT OF JUSTICE AWARD Michael Chertoff, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and a former federal appellate judge, received the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists’ 2006 Pursuit of Justice Award. Association President Robert Weinberg says the award presented to Chertoff “looks toward prevention of injustice in the future. The role of Michael Chertoff, who was recently called upon to light the first candle on the National Menorah to commemorate the holiday of Hanukkah, is to protect us against would-be mass murderers from the ranks of Islamist terrorism today.”
WASHINGTON HOSPITAL CENTER Rick Weiss, managing partner at Foley & Lardner, has been elected to a one-year term as chairman of the board of the Washington Hospital Center, the largest nonprofit hospital in Washington and one of four major teaching hospitals in the city.
