American University constitutional law professor Jamin Raskin is an outspoken Democrat and a tireless champion for D.C. voting rights, so when he stood on his front porch last week to announce his candidacy for local office no one was surprised. But Raskin is not running in the District. He is seeking to represent Silver Spring and Takoma Park in the Maryland State Senate and is mounting a vigorous primary challenge to incumbent Ida Ruben, who has represented the area for more than 30 years. While Raskin may enjoy name recognition for his work on D.C. issues, the 16-year resident of Takoma Park has been immersed in many Maryland causes, as well. He served as the first chairman of the Maryland State Higher Education Labor Relations Board and as campaign manager for Montgomery County State’s Attorney Douglas Gansler. As for how he thinks his image as a crusader for the District may be perceived by Maryland voters, “I don’t think that Democratic primary voters will hold it against me that I stood up for voting rights in the District,” he says. “I am proud of that, but I have also fought for all kinds of voting rights.”
