2006 will be a good year for lawyers: chock-full of major litigation and hefty paydays, so says D.C. medical malpractice king Jack Olender in his annual top 10 legal predictions for the coming year. Though he successfully predicted both O.J. Simpson’s acquittal and Jack Kevorkian’s conviction, Olender doesn’t venture a guess as to the legal fortunes of Rep. Tom DeLay or disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But he says one thing you can bet on is that the big-name lawyers who represent them will soon join D.C. lawyer Benjamin Civiletti in reaching the magic $1,000-an-hour billing club. After all, Olender last year predicted fees would hit the thousand-dollar mark. Among his other predictions, Olender says the year will provide proof that insurers are responsible for doctors’ surging malpractice premiums, not patients (or their malpractice lawyers), and that “oversized” football players will sue the National Football League, blaming the teams for pressuring players to bulk up to their detriment. With an accuracy rate of about 90 percent, Olender says he is “confident beyond a reasonable doubt” about his predictions. Try telling that to “Chief Justice” Antonin Scalia.
