Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s decision to raise first-year associate salaries to $135,000 hasn’t set off a big firm salary war � la 1999 — at least not yet. Hogan & Hartson Chairman J. Warren Gorrell Jr. says his firm has decided to hold the line on first-year salaries at $125,000, though junior associates have been told they will get a raise if more firms go to $135,000 or above. But Hogan, like many firms, did bump salaries for senior-level associates. As a result, many junior associates likely will have to console themselves with their year-end bonuses, which should still fund a trip to the Lexus dealership. At Chadbourne & Parke’s D.C. offices, the firm says first-years will be getting bonuses as high as $30,000, with senior-level associates pulling in as much as $65,000. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which pays a base salary of $140,000 to new law school grads, is giving $15,000 bonuses to junior associates.
