CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SERVICES Robert Ruyak has been appointed chairman of the Advisory Council of the Archdiocesan Legal Network of Catholic Community Services. Ruyak was lauded for his pro bono work and for helping recruit lawyers to donate their time to the organization. The Legal Network provides pro bono legal services to low-income people living in Washington, D.C. Ruyak is managing partner and chairman of the executive committee of Howrey.
THE CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM Tom O’Neil, a partner at DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, was named president of The Contemporary Museum’s board of trustees. O’Neil has been a member of the museum’s board for the past three years, chairing the development committee and serving on its executive committee.
GEORGETOWN JOURNAL Georgetown University Law Center’s Georgetown Journal of International Law has been selected by the U.S. Court of International Trade as the first law journal sanctioned to publish an annual review of its work. “This development comes at a significant time for the Journal and for the Law Center in its evolution as a premier law school in the United States for transnational law generally, and international trade in particular,” Georgetown Law Center Dean T. Alexander Aleinikoff says. The new annual publication will be titled International Trade Review and will be an independent critique and analysis of the work of the Court of International Trade. It will draw articles, essays, notes, and case commentaries from practitioners, academics, and students from all over the world. These scholarly pieces will be selected by the editors.
MANLEY O. HUDSON MEDAL Judge Theodor Meron was awarded the Manley O. Hudson Medal by the American Society of International Law (ASIL). Meron was recognized for his work as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The medal — given for exceptional contributions to scholarship and achievement in international law — is awarded not on an annual basis, but instead when the panel deems it is warranted. The ASIL Honors Committee recommended Meron for the medal, and the ASIL Executive Council approved the recommendation on November 5. In keeping with recent tradition, Meron will deliver an address at ASIL’s 100th Annual Meeting, scheduled to take place March 29-April 1, 2006, in the District.
REAL ESTATE LAWYERS Philip Horowitz, a senior real estate partner with Venable, has been elected president of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. He assumes the position in January for a one-year term.
REPUBLICAN LAWYER OF THE YEAR Robert Horn, a partner at Patton Boggs, and Betty Southard, a partner at Baker & Hostetler, were named Republican Lawyer of the Year by the Republican National Lawyers Association. Horn serves as co-chair of the RNLA. The RNLA is a national organization whose stated mission is to advance Republican ideals and foster open and fair elections. The Republican Lawyer of the Year award recognizes attorneys for outstanding professional accomplishments and years of dedicated service to the Republican Party and its ideals. — Nathan Carlile
